What is a Lung Cancer Community Volunteer?

Who we are:

The Dusty Joy Foundation works to improve the lives of those touched by lung cancer through programs promoting education, early detection and compassion. We serve the lung cancer community through two primary programs: the LiveLung web portal, which provides information and inspiration, and our grassroots initiative to reach communities throughout the country through balloon releases and a network of lung cancer Community Volunteers.

Why we need you:

For every 100 people with colon cancer, 65 will live to tell their stories. Of every 100 women diagnosed with breast cancer, 88 live to become breast cancer advocates. But for every 100 lung cancer diagnoses, only 15 survive. Because there are so few survivors, the lung cancer community simply does not have the great numbers of advocates that other cancers have. That’s why we need you to help speak for those who do not have breath to speak for themselves. If someone you care for lost their life to lung cancer, we ask you to consider serving as a lung cancer Community Volunteer as a memorial tribute to your loved one. You may find serving in this way to be therapeutic, and you will be serving where you are truly needed.

What you’ll be doing:

Your responsibilities as a Lung Cancer Community Volunteer will take very little time. In addition to providing support for the balloon release in your area, you will become part of an informed, compassionate network of advocates in every community. The responsibilities of a Community Volunteer include the following:

  • Learn about lung cancer and be willing to share your knowledge with others;
  • Assist with DJF Educational Rally & Balloon Release in your community;
  • Distribute lung cancer support materials monthly in your community.

We will help you get the educational materials for your community, and provide support for you along the way. We need you to help us reach every community!
